Google appears to have scored another coup in its ongoing rivalry with Apple, having reportedly lured one of the company's senior directors to its Mountain View headquarters. Simon Prakash has worked at Apple for more than eight years, most recently serving as the firm's senior director of product integrity and Google has poached him to work on a "secret project." . Google has begun offering a beta version of its Chrome browser for Android phones, finally beginning the move to unify its computer, tablet and mobile phone browsers. The browser, however, is only available for phones and tablets running Android 4.0, also known as Ice Cream Sandwich. As of Feb. 1, just one per cent of Android devices in use are running Ice Cream Sandwich. . Apple ended up being the top-selling smartphone vendor for the fourth quarter of 2011, but rumors about an as-yet unconfirmed next-generation Apple TV claimed much of the company's spotlight over the last week. . Caps will be placed on the amount of broadcasting spectrum that mobile phone carriers can buy when analog TV is switched off, to ensure that at least three competitors will operate in the 4G market. . Talk in the blogosphere that Apple will announce the next iPad at a special event early next month. . The AFL and other major sport bodies held talks with the Prime Minister and senior ministers yesterday to demand changes to the law to protect broadcast rights worth hundreds of millions of dollars. And Prime Minister Julia Gillard says the government is now looking at what it can do and that the federal government will consider whether there needs to be changes to copyright laws after being lobbied by Australia's sporting codes over broadcasting rights. . Telstra reported significant mobile revenue and subscriber growth during the second half of 2011. The company’s domestic mobile business enjoyed revenue growth of 10.9 per cent to hit $4.39 billion for the period, powered by Telstra selling almost one million mobile phones.
