Description:

Iranian born photographer, Fazilat Soukhakian knows the "forbidden" intimately and takes it head-on. In this conversation, she speaks plainly about growing up in a country that would view her ideology and her work as criminal.

Fazilat's work casts a spotlight on both the political and social inequity that exists, not only in Iran but around the world. Her ability to tell people's stories through a documentary style of photography has put her on the map with exhibitions and awards in Iran, Romania, Dubai and in the United States.

Fazilat's commitment to her work has earned her a position as an assistant professor of photography at Utah State University.

  • It’s fear at the beginning, but then you feel really liberated
  • I censored myself a lot as a child... and then when I came here [U.S.], thankfully, I didn’t have anyone to judge me... I can reveal my hair any way I want...it was such good feeling
  • I need to talk about these issues. I have to do something. I might not be able to change anything, but at least I talked about it because I witnessed that
  • I grew up with a lot of forbidden. In my country, singing for women is forbidden. Dancing for women is forbidden... revealing my hair is forbidden So, everything
  • A lot of change is being done by these very strong, young women who are not scared
