Description: Before retiring in 2015, San Luis Obispo resident Alex Karlin was a judge for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, or the NRC, the federal regulatory body for commercial nuclear power plants. Karlin now sits on the Diablo Canyon Decommissioning Engagement Panel, which was created and appointed by plant owner PG&E. Karlin and the county of San Luis Obispo, among others, are calling for an independent panel overseeing the decommissioning process. In a recent studio interview we'll be airing in two parts, Karlin also speaks about a number of issues surrounding the planned closure of Diablo Canyon—from spent fuel storage to what will happen to the pristine acreage around the facility owned by the now-bankrupt PG&E.
