It seems like being a vegan and getting a tattoo... or two... or 50... goes hand in hand. Keeping the process vegan and cruelty free can be a bit of an adventure. Have a guide or at least knowing what to ask and what to look out for can be a great help. Welp, that's what we're here for! I recently started my first sleeve and had an amazing experience with my artist, Carlos Fuentes [instagram] of Mystic Owl Tattoo. I was lucky enough to work with a shop that already followed a vegan practice. However, I wanted to share some things to be aware of as well as what to expect when you start your tattoo journey. Vegan Tattoos - Gotch yas! Ink - Watch out for
- bone char, glycerin from animal fat, gelatin, or shellac
- Non-vegan
- MOMS Nuclear / Millennium
- Vegan
Transfer Paper - Watch out for
- lanolin or animal based waxes
- Vegan
Razor / Soap - Watch out for
- glycerin from animal fat, gelatin, or lanolin
- Non-vegan
- Most cheap razors and "green soap"
- Vegan
Aftercare - Watch out for
- beeswax, lanolin, or animal based oil
- Non-vegan
- Most lotions and balms
- The popular option, "Aquafor", is not vegan!
