Ashton DeFusco was a very young, highly motivated Marine eager to deploy. She joined the military searching for honor and courage, and she found it; but not in the way she expected. While in Afghanistan, something happened that made Ashton have a change of heart and she became a pacifist, completely opposed to war and all forms of violence. In this interview, Hannah McNeely and Evan Oliver talk to her about her story and learn what it looks like for a soldier to leave the military by convincing the most elite military branch in the U.S. of her newfound beliefs. See our blog post to see pictures of Ashton and a copy of the essay she wrote to apply for conscientious objection.
