A leading figure in the mapping of the human genome sequence, he's worked to translate that discovery into a revolution in medical treatment. In 11 years as director of the National Institutes of Health, he's overseen a nearly 40% growth in the agency's budget. He'll be stepping down as director at the end of the year, but continuing to lead the laboratory at the National Human Genome Research Institute.
