Description: This week I am joined by Catherine Herling. She is a licensed family therapist and marriage counselor. She specializes in Neurodivergent Relationships. This week we will be answering listener questions relating to her specialization with Neurodivergent Relationships. Today’s question: Do you have any tips on what I can do to advocate for my child in the school system and also just within our community? My child is Neurodivergent and struggles and sometimes I wish people at their school or people in their friendship circles understood this a little bit more.  Answer: You can not learn how to self advocate until someone advocates for you. We are fortunate that there are laws in place that public school systems have to follow in accordance with Neurodivergent children.   Tips to get the process started: First you write a letter requesting an assessment for the need of accommodations. They are then required to respond and have them working on your child’s behalf. You will then have a meeting and the school will give a plan of how this will work for your child. If you don’t feel this is what your child needs, speak up. You know your child better than they do. They only see your child a few hours a day and you know them best.  Remember, start the process as soon as possible.
