Here's an outline of the topics discussed in this coaching call. There's something for everybody here. Enjoy!
Part 1: Barry
1) Transition to modern Forehand
Modern forehand/we don’t have to be Rafa
Clearing the net (high trajectory)
Topspin Approach to the backhand-Brent likes this play.
2) Overhead
Get back as soon as you know the lob is coming (early)
Maintaining good net position
Get turned/Take a step back-moving up if need be
Relaxed with contact point in front and on the right-throwing
motion.
Natural throwing motion -shoulder up
3) Preparing for Tournaments
Barry lost in Finals/Playing a retriever who is fit
Fitness-Arms and legs feel like rubber (Barry said)
Off-court training to prepare for the next time (Brent said)
Using Clay or Grass to train-easier on the body
Part 2: Mark/Brian/Ken
1) Mark: Just starting senior tennis-getting into doubles
Getting into net (hitting a weak volley vs. staying back)
Brent said move into the court a bit and maybe hit forehand
approach
Against someone who has their return dialed in.
Fake poaches against a team who is returning well
Transitional shots to get into net-many ways to get into net,
2) Brian: Grips-can't decide eastern vs. continental
Brian uses continental on serve/ volley-he's confused about
forehand/backhand
Brent said use eastern for top/learn to switch
grips!!!! -
Depending on what you want.
Keep hands relaxed between shots
Use the new technology to add top and pace
3) Ken: Wants more pace/top on Forehand (little dip/waggle below ball
before contact alla Roger)
Ken was taught to point forehand at fence-too stiff.
Turn sideways/Point fingertips up/circle shape/hand relaxed
The fingers on the racquet are pointing up until strike time
Then the racquet drops below the ball.
Keep grip relaxed
4) Mark: Playing double-returning against a server who stays back
Brent said get into net
drop volley
5)Mark: What to do with a low volley that gets the net man hitting a low
ball in the middle
Go back to the baseline player
Aussie formation vs I formation
Poaching/Faking etc...
