Description:
SHOW NOTES KEY IDEAS: David Doell is committed. He is committed to making his business work, regardless of what equipment he does or does not have. David has started an agricultural business with no overhead and no advertising budget. And, he is running out of inventory and is raising his prices. What is he doing? He is driving out of Calgary, Alberta and collecting horse manure from farmers for free. Then he brings back to his home in the city, screens it and sells it to gardeners. What is his cost to operate this business? Gas money. He advertises on the Canadian equivalent of Craigslist for free, and his customers come to him to load their manure. I know what you are asking. How much did he spend on a pickup to start this business. The answer is nothing! He actually put a tarp in the trunk of his car and filled the trunk with manure. Nowadays he fills plastic totes and stuffs them in the car, but he did not even let the lack of a pickup stop him from doing this. I actually interviewed David a little over a year got on episode #228. In this episode I had the opportunity to do a follow up interview with him to see where he was at now. And we were able to speak about new opportunities that he is pursuing, including teaching other people about this business. ADVICE FROM DAVID: START - Get started. You can consume information, over and and over and over, through books, podcasts etc. But five minutes of running your own business will teach you more than all of that. USE WHAT YOU HAVE - Never has a person been more true to his advice than David is here. Loading manure in the trunk of your car. He truly used what he had. BEST BUSINESS ADVICE DAVID HAS EVER RECEIVED: Don't be scared to experiment with price. Raise prices, lower prices, play with quantities, etc. Figure out how you can best price your product. PERSONAL HABIT THAT HELPS DAVID SUCCEED: The best business advice that David received goes right along with a habit of his....experimentation. RESOURCES: David highly recommends The $100 Startup: Reinvent the Way You Make a Living, Do What You Love, and Create a New Future as a book that was highly influential for him. He used much less than $100 to start his business, but this book erases the myth that lots of startup capital is needed to have a successful business. CONTACT INFORMATION AND LINKS: David is creating a course to teach other people how to replicate what he has done. You can find the link here: Manure Startup LISTEN TO US ON SATELLITE RADIO!
