SHOW NOTES
INTRODUCING SAMANTHA SMITH (MCCLAIN)!
On this show I frequently talk about going outside of agriculture to gain expertise and then bringing it back to agriculture to develop your own business. Today, we are going to look at things in reverse. There is a lot we can gain from agriculture that would be very useful in industry outside of ag. Much of this is taught in the FFA, and today’s guest is going to talk to us all about this.
Samantha Smith had a long career in the FFA and was just awarded her American Degree in 2019. During her time in the FFA she started her own business, Sunrise Acres, and sold show goats. She also became an officer and ultimately was her chapter’s president.
During this journey Samantha developed a lot of redeeming skills that will be valuable to any employer, whether or not they are in agriculture industry. Samantha actually has a dream of becoming a pharmacist and is already pursuing this at Ashworth College studying to become a pharmacy technician. When she completes this she wants to take the next step and become a pharmacist.
There is no doubt that the skills she developed and things that she learned in the FFA are going to make her a very valuable employee of any pharmacy or even her own business when she reaches her destination.

Donate to FFA – One way that FFA students are able to start small businesses is through an FFA grant of $1,000. In 2014, 141 FFA students received these grants. With your donations, more students can get this head start – pay it forward.
REASONS TO DONATE TO FFA:
- Only 2% of Americans grow and raise most of the food and livestock consumed by the other 98% as well as the rest of the world. FFA is providing the needed education, training and resources to Americans that will carry that torch forward and insure that America continues to have inexpensive, quality food.
- Rural Communities will rely on entrepreneurship in the future for population growth and job creation. The FFA is a major catalyst to that entrepreneurial growth.
- Farmers, ranchers and those working in agriculture give the rest of America incredible amounts of freedom because the search for food is as simple as going to the grocery store:
“The future of American agriculture depends on the involvement and investment in America’s youth, In order to prepare for the population of tomorrow, we need to encourage America’s youth today, and show that careers in agriculture are profitable, rewarding, and vital.”.
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Sonny Perdue
