In the mid 90s, the cinematic landscape was much different. Batman and the general comic book film was about to go on hiatus until 2005 after director Joel Schumacher drove its toyetic Batmobile up a building and over ice, and The Addams Family had their two films come and go. We needed a new action hero based off an already established commodity. Enter an at the time squeaky clean, ever smiling Tom Cruise as Agent Ethan Hunt. The Mission Impossible film series, based on the 60s television show, started off as the first film franchise Cruise was associated with. But the films gradually turned into the go to when Cruise needed either a hit or image makeover.
1996 was a big career year for Tom Cruise. Though he was still riding high on his 80s cred, he hadn't really established himself as an action star. With the decade's previous title holders Ah-nold and Sly taking hiatuses from their successful franchises, the time for Cruise to pounce was now. Still relatively shiny in the public eye with a seemingly happy marriage to Nicole Kidman, his career was set to take off into a whole new direction.
Enter Mission Impossible. The intrigue of bringing Brian DePalma was making the film be a huge possibility of being one of characterized drama. But DePalma pulled no punches, and the first Mission Impossible film proved to be a mega hit with audiences, and a so-so one for critics. Even if nobody who saw it knew what the hell was going on.
Join me, Matt, and Aftertaste newcomer Pete MC, as we start our dive down the Mission Impossible franchise, and wonder if and when the film ever untangles itself from its own web. And keep coming back, as we will review each film all the way through the new release Mission Impossible: Fallout, which arrives in theaters July 27th.
