Description: The dawn of horror as we know it may be the best way I have seen The Texas Chainsaw Massacre described. Directed and co-written by a then upcoming filmmaker from Texas named Tobe Hooper, the original 1974 film tore through audiences and has had such a lasting impact on horror culture that filmmakers such as Rob Zombie and Eli Roth constantly cite it as their inspiration. But with three sequels and a myriad of remakes and retellings in its path, does the series deserve its place on the upper echelon of horror film series ever made? That's what me, Matthew Goudreau, and Mik Duffy are here to discuss. Inspired by his laying eyes on a chainsaw while in the midst of Christmas shopping, director Tobe Hooper took what amounted to a $140,000 budget and made a nightmare of a film called The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. With audiences reveling and critics reviled, Hooper's film has garnered quite a following over the years, of which we are still seeing the influence of today. Constantly on top of best of horror lists year after year, me, Matt, and Mik dissect the seminal favorite and decide whether the film deserves its notoriety, or if its all hyperbole for an overrated film. But that's not all. Afterward, we do indeed track the making of Hooper's follow-up, fittingly called The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. With a crazy plot and an even crazier Dennis Hopper wielding chainsaws, the Cannon film has both its lovers and detractors. But which way do we fall? Listen below to find out! And be sure to keep checking this space in the weeks to come, as we are going through each film, two at a time, all the way through last year's Leatherface.
