A damning new report into Australia’s freedom of information system has revealed a soaring number of rejections and delays of requests to release documents, with researchers warning the system has become “clogged and slow”.
Introduced in 1982, the Freedom of Information Act was designed to increase government transparency by allowing individuals to request copies of government documents and correspondence.
However, obstruction and delays in the system mean many requests are being returned outside of reasonable timelines, in some cases as long as three years.
