Description:

The federal government is sparring for a fight with the tech giants ruling over the gig economy.

Workplace relations minister Tony Burke has accused platforms like Uber, Deliveroo, Menulog and Doordash of driving down the wages of up to one million workers, calling their labour contracts a "cancer" spreading through the Australian economy.

And now they’re spreading into aged and disability care.

So, the Labor government is preparing for a sweeping expansion of the industrial relations system. Today, Burke has held the first in a series of meetings with some of the major players in the gig economy in the hope of giving their workers the same rights as traditional employees.

Today on Please Explain, industrial relations reporter Nick Bonyhady joins Kate Aubusson to discuss the gig economy.
