Climate and energy minister Chris Bowen says the government is open to negotiating with the crossbench over Labor’s emissions reduction scheme.
Labor will introduce its legislation laying out a 43 per cent target to Parliament next week.
Chris Bowen says the target is a floor, not a ceiling, and the government is open to “sensible suggestions” from the crossbench.
It’s a softening of rhetoric, and follows Greens leader Adam Bandt saying his party would be open to supporting the bill if it didn’t limit the target to 43 per cent.
But Bandt also warned federal approval for any new coal and gas projects would undermine efforts to cut emissions by 43 per cent, on 2005 levels, by 2030.
Today on Please Explain, federal political reporter Lisa Visentin joins Bianca Hall to discuss the government's carbon reduction legislation. Subscribe to The Age & SMH: https://subscribe.smh.com.au/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. |
