How real is the threat of foot and mouth disease?

Description:

Australian authorities are increasingly concerned about the prospect of the devastating foot and mouth disease making its way into the country.

An outbreak of the disease in Indonesia has spread to the island of Bali, which is visited by more than 1 million Australian tourists a year.

There are warnings that even a single case could cause devastation for Australia's $27 billion livestock export trade, with the federal government estimating the total cost of a major outbreak at $80 billion.

Agriculture Minister Murray Watt is in Indonesia today, to offer Australia’s support to help contain the disease.

Today on Please Explain, climate and energy correspondent Mike Foley joins Bianca Hall to discuss the biosecurity threat posed by foot and mouth disease.
