Defence Minister Richard Marles is in Tokyo today, for high-level discussions on strengthening military ties between Australia and Japan.
Marles will meet with Japanese Defence Minister Nobuo Kishi to cement what Marles describes as a “relationship of affection”.
But the visit also comes amid an increasingly complex geopolitical situation.
Marles told The Age and The Herald Australia would continue to fly aircraft near the disputed Paracel Islands in the South China Sea, despite a Chinese fighter jet releasing flares and small pieces of metal chaff near an Australian aircraft in the area in May.
Today on Please Explain, north Asia correspondent Eryk Bagshaw joins Bianca Hall to discuss Australia's growing ties with Japan and what it means for the region. Subscribe to The Age & SMH: https://subscribe.smh.com.au/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. |
