Human stories of hope and resilience are emerging amid the chaos wrought by Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine.
One of them is the love story of Yaryna Arieva and Svyatoslav Fursin. The couple married last Thursday, hours after Russian forces began their assault on Ukraine.
Arieva told The Age and the Herald that it was only when air raid sirens began ringing out as she was kissing her new husband that the “new reality” of life dawned on her.
The day after their wedding, the young couple joined Ukraine’s territorial forces – the military reserve component of the Ukrainian army – and began their combat training.
