Episode #103 "Why you should develop your closed guard first"

Description:

The boys talk about why you should focus on developing a strong closed guard game, especially at the beginning of your BJJ journey.

It seems that more and more schools are focusing on training the fancy open guard positions. Kroyler thinks this is due to both rule sets in competition as well as the desire to learn flippy fancy stuff.

Closed guard is literally what makes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu so unique amongst other martial arts. It allows you to fight off your back with equally efficacy as if you were on top. It’s a shame people don’t spend more time learning it.

Another thing that sets closed guard apart from other guards in BJJ is that it is universal in practicality between Gi, no-Gi, mma, and self defense. The same cannot be said about other types of guards.

People also tend to find that they gain a certain level of proficiency faster with closed guard as well. Just because of the innate nature of the guard itself, it makes it more difficult for the person on top to be able to attain what they need to accomplish their goals of attacking you. While you can switch seamlessly between attacks and defense from using closed guard.

Apparently Kroyler could have gone in and on... but he didn’t. So now we have to wait for a possible part two of a closed guard pro tip.

Meanwhile... look us up on the flick chat app and join the community of people giving us crap online. It’s been really fun so far!
