Episode #97 "Dealing with injuries in BJJ"

Category: Sports & Recreation
Duration: 01:13:27
Publish Date: 2019-04-24 23:00:00
Description:

On this episode the boys have Kroyler answer a listener email about getting hurt and where to go from here.

Kroyler does his thing and over explains in a way to encompass all things injuries related. This ensures that we can really get to the root cause of the problem.

First we discussed why injuries happen in the first place. Why are some training environments more susceptible to people getting hurt than others. Kroyler explains how he mitigates this problem in his gym by not allowing white belt on white belt action. He makes solid points.

According to the email, their was some YouTube Jiu Jitsu mixed with a bit of ego going on which led to the injurie. Kroyler has many, maaaany thoughts about this. Personally, I find the .01% of videos he’s talking about and try to incorporate them into my overall game....

We realize it’s fun to roll with people around your same level, but you have to ask yourself if it makes sense to compromise your wellbeing for any given roll just so you have a better chance at tapping someone out. Kroyler’s method, while insuring that white belts most certainly never win any rolls, keeps everyone in the gym much safer.

Moving on to the “I’m already injured, now what”? portion of the question...

Keep showing up. Take notes. Make friends. Watch people roll and try to understand what they’re trying to accomplish. Just don’t quit.

We understand it’s hard to do all those things and just watch while everyone else is having fun. But keep in mind that a few weeks or months is a small price to pay in the grand scheme of your BJJ career if you will. Sometimes we just have to suck it up.

We also throw shade at Kroyler and Andrew at the end of the show. Paulie makes a big mistake by challenging Andrew to a challenge match at the upcoming team training to prove that being bigger and stronger trumps being small, fast, young, and generally all around better at Jiu Jitsu. It’s going to tie right in with our next episode and provide some fun for the listeners as well...so long as Andrew accepts the challenge.
