#1145: MM- Processed Foods & Autism Risk

Category: Health

Description:

Autism is on the rise and scientists may have linked it to consumption of processed foods.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Previous research found that autistic children lack beneficial strains of bacteria in their gut microbiome.  Because of this, a lot of autistic children struggle with constipation, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.  A new study out of University of Central Florida studied the link between propionic acid, a common food preservative, and autism.  In the study, too much propionic acid in the gut lining led to a buildup of glial cells, which damaged molecular pathways that inhibited neurons from sending information to the body.  Researchers also found that pregnant women who eat high amounts of processed foods put their unborn babies at risk for autism.
