#1115: MM- Too Much Protein Linked to Depression

Description:

Are you a protein shake junkie? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Protein shakes and drinks are all the rage, but too much of a good thing is not always a good thing. A new study out of the University of Sydney looked at the effects of too much protein and found that it could actually shorten your life. Keep in mind that the average adult needs between 50-60 grams of protein spread out over a day. That’s combined protein from all sources. Many protein bars and shakes on the market contain close to that. What happens to all that excess protein? Well, it could be making you fat and or depressed. My advice to you is to limit your protein shakes or bars to no more than three a week and use them as meal replacements and never as just a snack. This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Learn why patients from around the globe visit Executive Medicine of Texas for their executive physical exam and age management. Visit EMTexas.com that’s EMTexas.com or call 1-800-910- EXEC
