In this episode, we describe the development of rhetoric in ancient Greece and its importance especially in Classical Athens; the lecturers that traveled from city to city, teaching not only rhetoric but also all of the other important subjects that were not being covered by an Athenians’ traditional education; and we detail the lives, influences, and various theories put forth by the earliest of these men known as the Sophists (included among them are Protagoras of Abdera, Gorgias of Leontini, Hippias of Elis, Prodicus of Ceos, and Thrasymachus of Chalcedon), as well as Antiphon, the first of the Attic orators
