Everyone deserves a good BJJ coach

Description:

The boys talk about an article about how even if you’re “just a white belt” you deserve the attention of your Jiu Jitsu coach.

It’s difficult enough to be the new person in the academy. You don’t know anything or anyone. You see a lot of people that seem to be part of a family and well, you’re just not a part of that yet.

If this is the case for a majority of people starting this sport, how much worse is it when the coach won’t even pay attention to you?

If the coach is playing favorites either because he’s buddies with the people who’ve trained longer or because he wants to help out the ones who compete and fly their banner at the tournaments, we’re here to tell you that’s not cool. You’re training is just as valid no matter the reasons you’re doing it for. You deserve the same attention everyone else is getting.

If politely bringing up needing more help doesn’t in fact help, maybe looking for a gym that will help you is in the cards.

That said, don’t just think you deserve all the attention from day one. Give a new gym a few months and give yourself time to fit in and become part of the team and recognized first.

Sometimes the coach is just busy or overwhelmed. Don’t take this as a personal affront. If it becomes an obvious habit of the coaches only paying attention to the good competitors or their friends, then maybe it’s time to have a conversation with them or move on.
