Episode #110 "Technical Rolling, for faster development"

Description:

The boys talk about a common problem found in the Jiu Jitsu community. Why is it I can drill a move proficiently, but it doesn’t work in live rolling?

For us at least...and the droves of people we talk to, it’s frustrating when we get really good at drilling a certain technique only to have it fail when we try it against a fully resisting opponent. Does that mean the technique is crap or I am....?

This line of thinking is counterproductive at best. Besides, the answer is probably you, not the technique that is flawed here.

So what to do???

Enter.... TECHNICAL ROLLING

It’s not enough to just drill a technique on a willing partner that ensures your success with a particular move. You need to start ramping up the resistance level to see where it starts to go wrong for you. Once you start to have problems, diagnose them with your partner and coach and work to gain more control over the technique.

Next, try starting your live rolls in the particular position you’re trying to improve. Once you get what you want or fail, start over in the same position. As you do this, learn their common reactions to what your doing and what you can do to shut them down or make your technique tighter.

Kroyler gets into greater depth of how to continue this process to get better and better insight to the new techniques you currently want to improve upon.

Do this and before you know it, you’ll be landing those techniques on people that really don’t want you to.
