Description:

This may not apply to all of our listeners today, but eventually it will. You might be that young, spry, athletic being who never seems to get injured or at least comes back quickly if you do, but it won’t last forever. Most likely, if you click play based on the title you’re on the “older” side of the grappling bell curve.

Ron Manes wrote up this pro tip for us as a well schooled aging grappler himself.

Basically, when you’re young and heal quickly you can take more risks. Hell, if you still live at home and are under your parents insurance all the better. Get after it, if you will. There comes a point tho, where you want to train, but can’t afford the injuries. What to do then?

You have to look at things a bit differently. Start picking and choosing your rolls if that’s allowed in your gym. If it’s not, know what to expect with who you’re rolling against and defend yourself properly by putting yourself in positions with less likelihood of getting hurt. Or even better, try and ha e a conversation with them about maybe taking it easy with you and just go ahead and tap early.

It’s easy for us to think we’re young in our own heads. Our minds write checks our bodies can’t cash. Be honest with yourself and train and recover accordingly. There’s no sense in not being able to train because you thought you were still 25.

If you’re just wanting to start BJJ, look for a gym that is more laid back and less competition oriented. Unless you’re that rare breed that has the genetics of a Demi god of course...

If you do get tweeked or injured, eas back into things rather than just starting gung ho like nothing happened. Basically... have a little common sense.

If you want to be a part of the conversation, download the flick chat app and follow grapplingdads (one word). It’s a great community who helps each other out from all over the world and ask questions that you may have as well. Some we even read on the show...
