Episode #101 "Build skills, not belts"

Description:

It always comes back to this doesn’t it...  No matter how much we hear we shouldn’t chase the belts, our minds keep wandering back to the ellure of them. Why do they tantalize us so?  What about stripes and colors around our waists cause us to feel pride or envy?

Paul Elliot, of simplebjj.com fame wrote an article 100 years ago of why chasing belts and promotions shouldn’t be at the forefront of our mind when we’re training. We decided to “read” it to once again help the people who are having a difficult time with how fast or, more generally, slow their progress through the ranks is.

Whether you’re a white belt beating all the blue belts or a blue belt getting beat by all the white belts, over time, it will all even out in the wash. Just be patient and continue to do your best and keep adding techniques to your arsenal of Jiu Jitsu and in time you will meet your goals.

A big factor in not getting upset is to stop comparing yourself with others. Everyone has their own struggles and issues and it’s not up to you when your coach decides to promote someone or not.

Of course this way of thinking takes time to come around to. Paul and kipperdoodles aren’t really on the same page on this topic either. We think that students and coaches should have realistic expectations of how to get to the next level to take some of the guesswork out of it.

We don’t advocate asking when you’re going to be promoted. We do think that talking to your coach and students about what they should focus on improving or on things they should stop doing before advancement.

Regardless, it’s a tough topic and emotional for some. Bottom line is, if you can get yourself to focus on building skills rather than belts, your journey will be a more pleasant one.
