Episode #99 “Athleticism and Jiu Jitsu Part 2“

Description:

Last weeks episode about athleticism and BJJ got a bit long in the tooth, so we made it a two parter. We’re hoping we may have answers to some feedback we received from last weeks episode in this one.

We start off talking about how it’s easier to make gains in physical abilities than in technical ones. It only takes a few years to change your physicality, but many more than that to hone your Jiu Jitsu skills.

White to blue belt level especially get the most out of training their attributes rather than their techniques. The problem here arises when they become dependent on those attributes and then they start to fade with age.

Many times, because physical abilities get you so far in competitions, the people who are becoming black belts and champions start their own schools and teach that to become more successful you also need to place a large focus on training your body more so than training your technique.

We try to be clear that there is nothing inherently wrong with being in top physical shape, just don’t rely on that over technical dominance when it comes to your own game. You should in fact at least have a minimal level of athleticism to be able to pull off the moves you need to in any given match.

We delve into the topic of cheating in this episode as well. With the lack of testing in the sport some competitors can get away with enhancing their physical abilities far more that the average person can. Totally not cool...

We wrap up the episode by reading some hate mail from Paul Elliot from simplebjj.com As “hurtful” as it was, the man made some good points...that we clearly don’t care about.
