Description:

How did athleticism take over Jiu Jitsu?

The boys talk about the fact that while BJJ was intended for the smaller weaker person to be able to dominate a fight with a bigger stronger opponent, most schools encourage students to by physically dominate as well. This really shows up in the competition scene where most people look like Adonis or some other such Greek mythological person.

On this same line of thinking, just because you’re winning the competition scene doesn’t mean you actually have good Jiu Jitsu skills. That’s one of those “tough pills to swallow” ideas right there.

The point is that at lower belt levels there are a couple of easy ways to dominate the competition. A few actually...

1:  Be a big fish in a small pond. Basically if at your weight and rank in nowheresville whereever you might just be “good compared to”, not actually good.

2:  Manipulating the rules. Because of the way the rules and time limits are set up in tournaments, many people just take advantage of the fact that you don’t actually have to submit someone to win.

3:  Getting physically jacked. At the lower levels especially, physical dominance plays a larger role as to who wins. This is because it’s easier to get to a place of physical dominance than technical dominance

Somewhere talking about all this the boys took a long side tangent about the rule sets and apparently how they think they have better ideas.

This episode got away from them a bit so they had to make it a two parter. So you’ll have to wait a week for the rest of this tip....
